Colic is one of the most common equine health issues. The treatment for colic differs as per the severity and the underlying problems. In some severe cases surgical intervention would be required. Providing clean water to your horse is also important. Water and hay should be fed before grain. Regular exercise, regular de-worming and not feeding your horse immediately after exercising will also help prevent colic. It is good to discuss the diet for your horse with the veterinarian.

One of the most common conditions that horses face in general, may it be a stabled horse or even un-stabled horse is skin problems. When I started to take care of my horse, I wanted to make sure his skin would be a perfect beauty. Not only do horses look good running, but their looks are enhanced by the quality of their skin or coat. But somehow even with my extensive personal care system my horse fell prey to Ringworm. I would like to elaborate a bit on this condition.

What is Ring Worm?

First of all, ring worm is a fungal infection which lives on the Keratin located in the coat of the horse. It’s not difficult to analyze its presence on your horse. The common symptom for ring worm is the presence of dry and flaky patches on the skin, along with hair loss around that area. It’s true it looks very ugly and do not mistake it for some kind of dirt that can be washed off by clean water. You will find your horse favoring that area a lot; this is basically because ring worm makes the affected area very itchy. If you find raised bumps on the skin or redness, then the condition might not be ringworm, as both of these are not symptoms of ringworm. Most of the times the ring worm patches are localized, but if immediate care is not taken then it might spread to other parts of the skin.

Treatment for Horses with Ring Worm

The treatment for this condition is not complex, but could be a little laborious. As a first step towards fixing the issue you must clip your horse. This will expose the infected area. The idea behind clipping is that the fungus thrives in damper condition, and once the hair is clipped then the infected area would be exposed to the UV rays of the sun, creating dry skin, which is helpful to get rid of the ring worm. Lameness, or diminished leg and foot function, in horses, should be carefully monitored and treated. Most lameness is temporary, perhaps from a stone in the shoe or hoof sore, and the horse is able to move normally when the irritation is resolved.

Chronic lameness is an indication of deeper problems, and should not be ignored. Sometimes lameness isn’t even noticeable, but you should be sensitive and in-tune with your horse’s behavior and performance to notice any changes. When the horse doesn’t move as evenly, or makes movements that it didn’t before, this is usually an indicator of lameness.

Lameness means the horse is in pain, and thus, it should not be ridden. Examine your horse for any obvious causes of pain and treat accordingly. Sometimes even an ill-fitting saddle can cause pain and temporary lameness, so be cognizant of all equipment and elements. Overeating can sometimes cause inflammation in the front feet, a condition known as laminitis or founder, and the pain from the inflammation can cause lameness.

Oftentimes, depending on the cause of the horses lameness, the animal will have to be put down. To this end owners will do well to ensure that they have adequate equine insurance so that they can recover some of the funds they may hav spent in acquiring and taking care of the animal.

If you can’t find an obvious cause for the pain and lameness, the horse should be examined by a veterinarian immediately, as this can be an indicator of more serious health problems, such as navicular disease, which is the degeneration of the navicular bone in the foot.

Race horse owners face this question with every horse. Gelding makes the horse more trainable and less aggressive. The downside is that it leaves the horse with no legacy once it’s glory days in racing are over. More trophies during the racing career or carrying on the bloodline after – that is the question a horse owner must ask.

Nature always played an important role in the breeding of horse over the past years, and only the strong horses in the wild survived and moved around freely. The male leader (stallion) used to fight off other stallions so as to protect his herd. But today horse breeding is no longer a difficult task. All this work made the horses more demanding and people realized what exactly they wanted from the horses and this is when they started to mingle and mix the breeds and bloodlines. Soon a newer breed evolved with much more refined qualities and characteristics.

If one is willing to breed horses for any personal reason, the best thing is to select a sound and healthy horse. Some of the stallion owners at times offer their horses for breeding for a fee. A mare gives birth to a single foal per year. On the other hand a stallion is allowed to breed with 40 mares every season with various methods like artificial insemination.

Nowadays horses are also used in the race course by some of the equine owners in order to make money out of it and that is why horse breeding has become more demanding than ever before.

Finally horse liability and equine insurance is also one important thing which should be taken into consideration by the equine owners because of the various factors such as the horse injuring a visitor or causing an accident, as it is always hard to predict. Things like these happen when you are least expecting anything to go wrong.

However, it is really exciting to own a horse and at the same time challenging to keep it in shape.
