Colic is one of the most common equine health issues. The treatment for colic differs as per the severity and the underlying problems. In some severe cases surgical intervention would be required. It is good to contact the veterinarian as soon as you find your horse suffering from colic and exhibiting violent behaviors. You can make the horse walk a bit while the Vet is on the way. This will distract the horse from the pain. During this panicky period it would be very tempting to administer medication to your horse as per your understanding. Administering medication without the consultation of the Vet could cause bigger problems, which is why it is good to wait. A Vet will perform various tests to assess the problem and will give the appropriate treatment.

Colic can be avoided by feeding clean, mould free and high quality fiber to your horse. Maintaining regular feeding schedule and avoiding feed changes can also help reduce colic in horses. Providing clean water to your horse is also important. Water and hay should be fed before grain. Regular exercise, regular de-worming and not feeding your horse immediately after exercising will also help prevent colic. It is good to discuss the diet for your horse with the veterinarian.

There are quite a few natural remedies that you can follow if the condition is not very critical. I recently saw a display stand showing a happy horse having some special herbs and below it was written Colic free. Herbs can also reduce colic in your horse. Apart from herbs, there are homeopathic remedies as well that can be benefited from. You can easily buy an emergency homeopathic kit for your horse. It would include remedies for colic in horses. I don’t really believe that Aroma therapy can heal the body, may be the mind, but as per many it can ease out the colic from your horse’s body.

Do you want to really impress your wife this anniversary? Why don’t you do something really different? Instead of behaving like other husbands and sticking to safe options like ortak jewellery, you can try learning how to ride a horse. That is right. Ride the animal that has been the mainstay of armies of human beings all over the world. Despite advanced weapons and missiles, almost every army in the world has a cavalry regiment in its corps.

You too can show off your masculine skills by learning how to control the horse. In many countries, a person desirous of marrying a woman must prove that he is strong enough to protect her. The proof of strength is inevitably shown by controlling and breaking a horse. Nothing can make you look sexier and masculine in front of your wife than the sight of you riding on a horse and controlling it perfectly.
It is important to understand the anatomy of the horse if you want to master the animal. What is the point of knowing that the motion of the horse is controlled by the flanks if you do not know where the flanks are? It is that fleshy part beneath the back where your feet will rest when you are riding. Simply judging the horse with the help of your heel on the flanks will be enough to control its motion.

It will trot, walk or gallop depending on the message you send. The knowledge of anatomy of the horse can also be used to impress your wife. Do you know there is a frog under the hoof of every horse? It is a small fleshy part that is helpful in maintaining balance of the horse and is situated right under the hoof. This should be a great ice breaker on your wedding anniversary.

One of the most common conditions that horses face in general, may it be a stabled horse or even un-stabled horse is skin problems. When I started to take care of my horse, I wanted to make sure his skin would be a perfect beauty. Not only do horses look good running, but their looks are enhanced by the quality of their skin or coat. But somehow even with my extensive personal care system my horse fell prey to Ringworm. I would like to elaborate a bit on this condition.

What is Ring Worm?

First of all, ring worm is a fungal infection which lives on the Keratin located in the coat of the horse. It’s not difficult to analyze its presence on your horse. The common symptom for ring worm is the presence of dry and flaky patches on the skin, along with hair loss around that area. It’s true it looks very ugly and do not mistake it for some kind of dirt that can be washed off by clean water. You will find your horse favoring that area a lot; this is basically because ring worm makes the affected area very itchy. If you find raised bumps on the skin or redness, then the condition might not be ringworm, as both of these are not symptoms of ringworm. Most of the times the ring worm patches are localized, but if immediate care is not taken then it might spread to other parts of the skin.

Treatment for Horses with Ring Worm

The treatment for this condition is not complex, but could be a little laborious. As a first step towards fixing the issue you must clip your horse. This will expose the infected area. The idea behind clipping is that the fungus thrives in damper condition, and once the hair is clipped then the infected area would be exposed to the UV rays of the sun, creating dry skin, which is helpful to get rid of the ring worm. You should also wash the horse with antifungal shampoo. This should be done every day till the skin is perfectly healed. You can find a good antifungal shampoo on Amazon.com. I was searching for R4i card on Amazon and somehow due to my previous searches on the site, I found an antifungal shampoo on the recommended list. In case if you are looking for an antifungal shampoo, you can check this link: http://astore.amazon.com/xz4-20/detail/B002C0KDG2 During the treatment period make sure that the horse if kept in dry and nicely ventilated area.

Lameness, or diminished leg and foot function, in horses, should be carefully monitored and treated. Most lameness is temporary, perhaps from a stone in the shoe or hoof sore, and the horse is able to move normally when the irritation is resolved.

Chronic lameness is an indication of deeper problems, and should not be ignored. Sometimes lameness isn’t even noticeable, but you should be sensitive and in-tune with your horse’s behavior and performance to notice any changes. When the horse doesn’t move as evenly, or makes movements that it didn’t before, this is usually an indicator of lameness.

Lameness means the horse is in pain, and thus, it should not be ridden. Examine your horse for any obvious causes of pain and treat accordingly. Sometimes even an ill-fitting saddle can cause pain and temporary lameness, so be cognizant of all equipment and elements. Overeating can sometimes cause inflammation in the front feet, a condition known as laminitis or founder, and the pain from the inflammation can cause lameness.

Oftentimes, depending on the cause of the horses lameness, the animal will have to be put down. To this end owners will do well to ensure that they have adequate equine insurance so that they can recover some of the funds they may hav spent in acquiring and taking care of the animal.

If you can’t find an obvious cause for the pain and lameness, the horse should be examined by a veterinarian immediately, as this can be an indicator of more serious health problems, such as navicular disease, which is the degeneration of the navicular bone in the foot.

Horses, like home heating oil, belong to an age that has long passed. If you are transported back in time and visited London in the eighteenth century, one thing that would strike you would be the sheer number of horses in the city. Horses were the sole medium of transportation within the city. If you wanted to travel from London to any other city in the country, you would have to use carriages pulled by horses.

There was an industry surrounding horses ranging from places where you could buy horses of good breeds for your use to individuals who made a life out of the task of clearing the city streets of the waste excreted by the horses.

Today, horses are no longer required for traveling from one place to another. Of course, those places where automobiles cannot be driven still make use of animal power. When it comes to animals, the horse is the best possible option to move from one place to another. Horses have to be trained. They are extremely strong and have the capacity of causing a lot of damage. A fall from a horse at a high speed can kill you.

Or, it can leave you paralyzed for life. Horses have the ability of pushing themselves beyond all known human limits. Take time out of your busy schedule to know more about these wonderful animals that helped mankind travel faster than ever in the pre Industrial Revolution world. This will be a good way to thank them for their services.

Equine forums are abuzz with this question- should I geld my horse or not! Everyone from mini owners to race horse owners seem to be confused about this age old conundrum- they talk about it at the stables, the track, and even when filling up with Diesel in Leeds – To geld or not to geld.

There are two points of views to be taken into account here. The first one addresses the concerns those with an amateur hobby of owning horses. The second one relates to the concerns of professionals with show quality purchases and race-ready horses. Whether or not to keep their animal a stud concerns both these parties equally. Let’s discuss a bit more about both these cases.

If you are an amateur horse-keeper and are looking at gelding options you have to consider a few things. Gelding will calm down the animal; make it less aggressive and less prone to going after the ladies. This will definitely makes the handling of the horse a lot easier. But then you can’t breed the animal.

If you think the horse has a good bloodline and you can afford to train and prepare the animal for shows to build interest for breeding then you must keep him a stud. There are several things to consider though – can you afford the training and upkeep? Do you have enough barn space for training and breeding the stud? Do you have the time required? Basically, just confirm whether the horse is worth all this effort

Race horse owners face this question with every horse. Gelding makes the horse more trainable and less aggressive. The downside is that it leaves the horse with no legacy once it’s glory days in racing are over. More trophies during the racing career or carrying on the bloodline after – that is the question a horse owner must ask.

Adequate horse care is essential. There are various points that you need to master if you take up the task of a horse. You have to look after the horse as being a fellow member within the family.

First you have to acquire some grooming items. Make sure you get a number of brushes and combs to help make your horse appear good. Grooming the equine is a great method to bond with them; they will appreciate it as much as you will. Horses take pleasure in grooming a lot so it wouldn’t be unexpected to see them drift off as you are grooming them.

While grooming your equine often search for grazes and scratches if any. Should you discover any injuries address it right away. Speedy treatment helps prevent small injury from turning into major problems. Ensure that you check their feet to avoid thrush along with other hoof conditions from festering.

Feet can be a very delicate and essential part therefore be sure you check them regularly and if the equine usually spends more time on cement or rock solid ground it is best to have them wear shoes. If your equine usually spends more of their time on much softer ground then shoes will not be needed.

Keep your equine stall tidy. You have to muck away the manure and damp bedding. With respect to the climate conditions and the need you are able to choose how frequently to clean the booth. Once your horse and it’s stall is in order, you can then go and treat yourself with some contemporary designer jewellery.

So you have put up with children’s tears or teenage tantrums for weeks, and then you finally give in to pressure and buy the kids a pony or horse. You have worked out all the up-front costs – not just the initial purchase price, but also the feed, the blankets, the equipment for the horse and safety helmets and outfits for the kids, riding lessons, cost of the meadow it will graze upon or the stables it will live in, and so on. But there’s one other crucial aspect to owning a horse that many families forget about when they first venture into the field of horse management, and that is equine insurance.

You wouldn’t dream of driving your car onto the public roads without adequate motor insurance, so why do so many people ride their horses along public streets without any insurance at all? Even worse, why do sensible parents not think about insurance for their children riding Dobby around on public thoroughfares?

Equine insurance is important in so many ways that lie in the background of our minds, but which really ought to be screaming in the forefront of our thoughts. First of all, most importantly of all, if your child takes a toss and falls off his or her horse, will he or she get prompt medical attention? In a nightmare scenario, your child will be injured and will need specialist care. Most sports professionals insure themselves against injury so that they get not just expert care, but, most importantly, immediate expert care. Is your child worth less?

Then there is injury to the horse itself. Vet’s bills can be punishing, but decent insurance will remove all worries about that from your mind.

Thirdly, there is the possibility of damage to a third party. Just in case Dobby should injure someone else, are you adequately insured to cover their claims? If you keep Dobby safe, you keep yourself and your child riders safe as well.

Equine sports have various disciplines and events. This is a kind of introduction for those who are interested and even those who have been into it but do not know detai ls of certain events. For the new comers, kit insurance is very necessary before taking up anything in this field. The popular ones include but not limited to combined training, dressage, driving, endurance, hunter/jumper, polo, racing, rodeo, and western. A few will be briefly explained. Historians believe that dressage was developed to prepare war horses for battle using tactical movements and training that come in handy during difficult battle field situations. One of the activities that thrill enthusiasts is the understanding in form of a two-way communication that is visible between the horse and its rider.

Driving is one of the most competitive equine sports and it is made of three different stages. The stages are dressage, marathon and cone. A whip (horse driver) requires specific abilities to go through these three stages. Western riding is believed to have started in the 17th century with most of its early equipment founded by the Spanish. It included aspects such as reining, cutting, working cow horse, western pleasure and halter. Western pleasure was born out of the need for people to show off the smooth and pleasure riding aspect of horse riding. It is also to emphasize how well trained a horse is. Rodeo activities include timed events, roping and rough stock competition. Timed event comprise of barrel racing, pole bending, steer wrestling and goat tying. Roping consists of calf roping, breakaway roping and team roping. There are so many more aspects of Equine sports that are worth discovering.

Nature always played an important role in the breeding of horse over the past years, and only the strong horses in the wild survived and moved around freely. The male leader (stallion) used to fight off other stallions so as to protect his herd. But today horse breeding is no longer a difficult task. The equine owners do selective breeding for traits such as breed, color and athletic ability.

Long back when owners domesticated their horse for the first time, they used them as a means of transportation and even to help them in their farms. All this work made the horses more demanding and people realized what exactly they wanted from the horses and this is when they started to mingle and mix the breeds and bloodlines. Soon a newer breed evolved with much more refined qualities and characteristics.

If one is willing to breed horses for any personal reason, the best thing is to select a sound and healthy horse. Some of the stallion owners at times offer their horses for breeding for a fee. A mare gives birth to a single foal per year. On the other hand a stallion is allowed to breed with 40 mares every season with various methods like artificial insemination.

Nowadays horses are also used in the race course by some of the equine owners in order to make money out of it and that is why horse breeding has become more demanding than ever before.

Finally horse liability and equine insurance is also one important thing which should be taken into consideration by the equine owners because of the various factors such as the horse injuring a visitor or causing an accident, as it is always hard to predict. Things like these happen when you are least expecting anything to go wrong.

However, it is really exciting to own a horse and at the same time challenging to keep it in shape.
