Keeping Dobby Safe

So you have put up with children’s tears or teenage tantrums for weeks, and then you finally give in to pressure and buy the kids a pony or horse. You have worked out all the up-front costs – not just the initial purchase price, but also the feed, the blankets, the equipment for the horse and safety helmets and outfits for the kids, riding lessons, cost of the meadow it will graze upon or the stables it will live in, and so on. But there’s one other crucial aspect to owning a horse that many families forget about when they first venture into the field of horse management, and that is equine insurance.
You wouldn’t dream of driving your car onto the public roads without adequate motor insurance, so why do so many people ride their horses along public streets without any insurance at all? Even worse, why do sensible parents not think about insurance for their children riding Dobby around on public thoroughfares?
Equine insurance is important in so many ways that lie in the background of our minds, but which really ought to be screaming in the forefront of our thoughts. First of all, most importantly of all, if your child takes a toss and falls off his or her horse, will he or she get prompt medical attention? In a nightmare scenario, your child will be injured and will need specialist care. Most sports professionals insure themselves against injury so that they get not just expert care, but, most importantly, immediate expert care. Is your child worth less?
Then there is injury to the horse itself. Vet’s bills can be punishing, but decent insurance will remove all worries about that from your mind.
Thirdly, there is the possibility of damage to a third party. Just in case Dobby should injure someone else, are you adequately insured to cover their claims? If you keep Dobby safe, you keep yourself and your child riders safe as well.
