A Healthy Horse Is A Happy Horse

The popular adage ‘as healthy as a horse’ would probably have one believe that a horse never falls sick. Contrary to its appearance or the perception of the world, the horse has a very delicate constitution and can easily fall prey to many ailments if adequate attention is not paid to their food, grooming and maintenance. Ignoring minor signs of health problems if not a wise thing to do as far as horses are concerned. They will not only turn into full blown medical emergencies overnight, they might also affect the other horses around. Certain parasites can easily find their way into a horse through common sources such as food and water. Mosquitoes as well as common flies can turn out be potential disease carriers and have been known to transmit diseases that can attack the immune system of the horse eventually leading to its death.
Horses are particularly susceptible to various viral infections and due to the contagious nature of such diseases, prevention by exercising due care is the safer option to go by. Minor ailments such as abdominal pain, saddle rashes and hoof problems are other common occurrences. Signs to watch out for that could indicate underlying serious issues in a horse include loss of appetite, fever and restlessness. Horse owners need to keep an eye out for these typical symptoms and ensure timely medical attention along with appropriate and regular grooming and cleanliness of the stables. Where possible regular check ups by a vet can help tackle most ailments before they get worse and end in a fatality.
